ALAN POTTAGE has been nominated by our branch to stand for the very important position of General Secretary of our union.
Saturday's branch meeting decided to unanimously nominate Alan.
It was a proud moment for both Alan and our branch.
Alan first attended our branch when he was nineteen and has been attending regularly despite Organising for the RMT all over the UK.
Alan joined the railway as a guard in 1982 quickly became an active union member.
He was soon elected a local rep and a few years later won a historic victory when he was voted in to Sectional Council. Alan's election gave RMT the majority on this regional negotiating body. He proved to be a strong and effective negotiator.
All of Alan's life in our union was spent organising, representing and fighting for our members.
He even put his life in danger in 1990 when he was invited to apartheid South Africa by the liberation movement during a bloody strike where over 40 union members were killed by death squads set up by the brutal regime.
A few years later he was elected to our National Executive and provided the strongest of leadership.
He passionately believes that RMT gets its strength from the active involvement of our members and that our elected leaders must always be accountable to the members.
Alan has fought many battles within the RMT to ensure we remain a workers led union.
We can think of no better person to continue Bob Crow's legacy.
Bob and Alan were both good friends for 27 years and Bob trusted Alan implicitly.
He asked Alan to devise a strategy to grow our union and we are now 23,000 additional members stronger. We also are much better organised with more trained reps and an education service that is the best in the movement.
Alan was devastated when his friend passed away on the 11th March and one of Alan's treasured possessions is Bob's old Millwall top he gave Alan in 1994 when the were together on our National Executive.
Our branch is fully committed to see Alan getting elected.
Alan will ensure Bob's legacy continues and that we build an even stronger union that will stand up for RMT members and will continue to fight for justice in our communities and all over the world.
