ANTI RACISM

Edinburgh branch has been actively opposing racism over the decades.

RMT is a principled organisation for all workers in the industries where we organise. We stand up against all forms of injustice and bullying.

Racism is totally unacceptable - wherever it rears its ugly head. Nazi organisations like the BNP and the fascist offshoot SDL are a threat to a democratic society. The first thing they'd do if the nightmare scenario ever happened is to get rid of trade unionists - just like the German Nazis in the 1930s.

But we've all come across it, haven't we? Racism can appear anywhere - it might happen at our workplace. It can even pollute our own union. Trouble is decent people find it very difficult to confront and deal with it.

If you ignore it - the problem will not go away.

We believe that everyone should be treated equally - with dignity and respect. Racists seek to divide workers and subject people to appalling abuse and hatred. It's not on!

So, for starters, any member suffering from any form of abuse should immediately contact your RMT Branch Secretary, Graham Buchanan on 07749 721 109. Graham will give advice and help ensure that this abuse is stopped and the abusers are dealt with. You must never suffer in silence.

Every RMT Member Can Make a Difference

It's very important that all RMT members realise that they can make a difference. It may not be you who is at the receiving end but we would encourage you to make it clear that YOU do not want to hear any racist drivel.

So don't ignore the racists, stand up and tell them straight!

Edinburgh branch was proud to move the following motion at the 2010 AGM - which was carried unanimously after some excellent contributions from many delegates.

Resolution for 2010 AGM

Anti-racism

That this AGM applauds the General Secretary and our Council of Executives for maintaining the RMT’s proud record of fighting racism.

We appreciate that it’s not only important to challenge racist organisations like the BNP but to also challenge racism wherever it appears in our society, including the workplace.

We therefore instruct the General Secretary to introduce ‘anti-racism’ training initiatives for RMT activists under the heading:

If you’re not part of the solution
you’re part of the problem!

This important initiative must also be incorporated into all General Representatives courses that we run, so that our activists realise that they have a responsibility as an RMT Representative to challenge racism and to be part of ‘the solution’.

The Council of Executives and National Officers should use their influence to further promote and enhance this important message within their constituencies.
